A Trifecta of What’s Best on the Box

And, with luck and a hard drive and a hub for the old USB port, the regular BC on TV format is back! The BEST FILM OF THE DAY **Groundhog Day, 1.08pm ISat) wasn’t picked was because it was picked fairly recently.

Today’s Number One Film:

Mad Max: Fury Road, 5.08pm HBO2. Watch this if you liked any of the other Mad Max, Terminator or Star Wars movies. The Mad Max film franchise may be the best of them all and is certainly the one that has improved the most. Closer to four than three decades on, the director who created the original (meaning both ‘first’ and ‘groundbreaking’) upstart action movie (and one of the great cult films of all time, anywhere) has the expertise, technology and budget to perfect his fuel-starved, post-nuclear Apocalypse other-world – and to fill it with highly memorable characters and moments. He also managed to get rid of the one thing that dragged the whole exercise down: the loutish anti-Semite, Mel Gibson. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead roles replace the old bigot, allowing the greatest car movie of all time to finally fire on all cylinders. If you don’t cheer when the guitar man starts rocking out, you need to have your imagination realigned. Directed by George Miller/ 2015/ Action-Sci-fi-Thriller/ 120 mins/ Rated R for intense sequences of violence throughout and for disturbing images.

Also watch:

The Heartbreak Kid, 6.10pm Fox Comedy. Watch this if you liked This is 40, There’s Something About Mary or Borat. It’s hard to spot a flaw in what is probably the Farrelly Brothers most perfectly realised film (with due and, um, heartfelt apologies to Mary). A water- - no, an airtight – script, impeccable pacing, astonishingly good comic performances and immaculate direction make it very hard to beat. It’s Farelly Bros so it’s very, very crude, of course, and definitely not for anyone who thought Dumb & Dumber and the Jackass movies are offensive. Ben Stiller is, without question, the funniest white man in America (discounting British imports like Sacha Baron Cohen and the Ricky Gervais Posse). Directed by the Farrelly Bros/ 2007/ USA / Comedy/ 116 mins/ Rated R for strong sexual content, crude humour and language.

The Hangover, 8.45pm MaxPrime. Watch this if you liked Desperado, Pineapple Express or Fight Club. As action-packed as Zombieland, as off the wall as Pineapple Express and with a script as intelligent and almost as funny as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, this could be the best road trip film since Sideways. All “entertainment” movies should be this well made; as close to a literary worth as a stag party movie will ever get; and, on top of all else, it’s got Mike Tyson and a Bengal tiger. Directed by Todd Phillips/ 2009/ Germany-USA/ Action-Comedy-Drama / 100’/ R for pervasive language, sexual content including nudity and some drug material) 8.45pm MaxPrime
