The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup
If they had started within BC on TV primetime (6pm-10pm), Emma Stone’s teen version of The Scarlet Letter (Easy A, 5.25pm Prmt) or Kevin Hart’s rom-com (About Last Night, 5.18pmn HBO) might have been in contention.
Today’s Number One Film:
The Stepford Wives, 7.30pm Fox Comedy Ch 557. Watch this if you liked Intolerable Cruelty, Pleasantville or The War of the Roses. This blackly comic mockery of the cost of the American concept of perfect family life, picket fences and smiling women is probably not for the literal-minded; for those with imagination, it’s potentially a treat. Though it features Nicole Kidman’s probably most overlooked role and a genuinely stellar cast including Christopher Walken, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Glenn Close and Jon Lovitz, it still remains a bit odd to watch and those who cannot find the key – its campness, its frankness, its audacity, whatever – to unlock their suspension of disbelief might miss the point entirely; those who find a way of watching it without prejudice are likely to be delighted. Directed by Frank Oz/ 2004/USA/ Dark Comedy-Sci-fi-Thriller/ 93 mins/ Rated PG-13 for sexual content, thematic material and language.
