The Good, the Bad, the Bold & the Beautiful

My name is Esther Lyons and this year will be 29 years I am working at Argyll Waterfall, Tobago.

I was a tour guide but I’m not anymore, because I damaged my knee. So now I am the cleaner! And I sell memorabilias.

I was born on the boat, the Bird of Paradise, leaving Tobago and going to Trinidad. So I really am a born Trinbagonian, born between the two islands. It was more in the middle [of the voyage] so they couldn’t turn back. I go to school in Trinidad but I always was in Tobago, up and down.

I went to Morvant Market School, they called it locally, Lower Morvant Government School. I liked school but I dropped out before time. I was a dropout. That is something you must regret because, after some time in life, you realise you don’t have papers, you don’t have this subject, don’t have that subject. But that didn’t hold me back.

I have a small family of one-and-one. I make two children, one died, one alive and one grandson. He is about 22 years now. Husband died 2007. I rather not talk about that stuff.

I’ve lived in both Trinidad & Tobago, up, down, up, down. I still go up, down, up, down. What happened, my father and mother end up living in Trinidad, so I live with them down there until I left school and come back to live in Tobago, in Whim, where I grow up. Whim is like if you going to Plymouth, like if you going to Les Coteau, you continue going straight.

Things change a lot since my girl days. Young girl children today, they do different things. In we time, we used to play moral and hopscotch and thing. Children now going with phone, phone, phone.

They still have people who like to play basketball, play football, watch cricket. But, most of the time, people only have they phone with them, only playing games. Technology good but is take up too much of your time nowadays.

I used to go down Trinidad and spend the weekend. If I miss the boat, I go with plane to watch the cricket at the Queen’s Park Oval! But now I don’t do that again. West Indies not winning so much again. So I’m not really a fan much. Now I watch on TV. When they winning, I’m excited, when they losing, I’m sad. I was watching the World Cup and they going good, going good and I picking up…and then they come and lost to Australia by five runs! That hurt me. Since then, I ent watch them no more.

West Indies gone through now but they always say is a cycle. Who winning for a certain amount of years will start to lose. So it going around and West Indies will come back again.

You see newspapers? I don’t really buy papers so much. Something will happen. You read Newsday, you get one story, you read Guardian, different story, you read Express, different story. One thing happen but you get three different story!

I talk what I know.

The biggest change I’ve seen in Trinidad & Tobago in my time is crime. Crime, crime, crime, crime, crime! Oh Lord! I love Trinidad but, sometimes, because of the crime what going on now, I doesn’t want to go!

In Tobago, we don’t lock the door! You leave your window open and you look out for your neighbour and your neighbour look out for you. But sometimes these criminals, these sprangers, these bandits, you ‘fraid, you don’t know who is who now! But you still have plenty-plenty-plenty-plenty good people.

I am a believer in God. You can’t blame God for the suffering in the world. Blame the Devil for that! People have a choice between good and evil. Some people want to do bad and end up good things happen to them but, is how you make up your bed, is how you lay down.

Bad things will happen to good people. That is how Satan have it! Sometimes, God allows thing to happen to you, for you to come on to him. Is a lesson for you to learn.

People say [American soap opera] Young & Restless is a picture you mustn’t watch but the reason I watch it is because I learn from it! What happening on the Young & Restless is what happening in the world!

Sometimes your own brother and your own sister, your own mother, your own father deceive you, boy! Sometime somebody who you tell yourself is your good friend, sometime is your friend who does do you! So that does make me watch my people around me, my workers, my friends. You learn all that from Young & Restless. And Bold & Beautiful. I’m bold but I ain’t beautiful – but I still learn from it!

In life, they have people who’s carry news. I used to have a coworker who grandmother used to say, “You must do as you know!” If you know this person does bring and carry news, have nothing to say to that person. You will tell them, “A” but them will go and say you say, “B”! And them will put in their own thing and say you say B AND C.

It good to lend, it good to borrow, it good to give. Some people will come and say, “lend”; you lend them this, they give it back. Some say, “borrow” – they borrow this, and they bring it back. “Give me this” and you not looking for it back, because you give them – but some people will say “borrow” and then they don’t bring it back! You want to help out, is good, but when you want to take-take-take and you never want to bring back, how people will trust you?

They say, “In God we trust, in man, we bust”. Some people say, “In woman, it wust.”

When people go to the waterfall and they come back, they could buy T-shirts, hats, towels, purses, postcard, all Argyll Waterfall. We have local organic soap, we have chains, earrings. Some people buy, some people don’t buy. Just like me. I will go in a store and see something, sometime I buy it, sometime I don’t. Sometime I might find it too dear and I will leave it but, if I really need it, and I can’t get it nowhere else cheaper, I have to buy it. When they don’t buy, I have to say, “Well, is the same thing with me.”

The best part of the job is meeting people, all kind of people. The bad part is when they say, “Hold on, I going in the car for the money” and they never come back. Is just a excuse. But sometime I and all make the same excuse. You see something selling in Town but you know you could get it cheaper but you can’t tell the people that. So you tell them, “I going down the road, I might come back.” Me know me ent coming back. So when they say they going in the car, I say, if they come back, they come back, if they ent come, they ent come. Some does come back.

I like to dance, listen to music, all kinds, but I like back-in-time more. A little of the soca, the clean one. Some of them Jamaican dub, I can’t even understand the words they saying. I just like the beat. I’s dance but I don’t know what they singing.

If I get invited to a birth-night, a 60th, a 70th, I will go to that. But paying to go in party? I don’t do that again!

If I talk politics and you put that in the paper, people might say I’m biased but, who win, win. You promise to do something? Well, try your best to do it. What I don’t like in politics is, if a party in and they doing a work, they building a school, and election come and they lost and they didn’t finish the school. The next party that win should finish that school! If you want to do something else new when you finish that, I don’t mind, but don’t leave that there abandoned! And all that money waste! That happen in Tobago!

What the Bible tell you: that, in the last days, man – they mean man and woman, eh, but the word they use is “man” – man will be lovers of money and self and not lovers of God. That is why them criminal don’t want to work. The work they do, they rather sit down and study how to go rob these people, how to thief this thing. The love gone. Drugs lick up a lot of people!

The love might be gone but they still have plenty honest people in Tobago. They work hard for they money.

A Tobagonian I would say is loving and kind. You could tell a neighbour you hungry and they will tell you, “Go and pick a bunch of fig there.” Go dig some yam. You hungry, they give you a bowl of food. We have harvest festival you eating and drinking on a Sunday, all these kinds of things.

No matter where you go in the world – America, Grenada, St Vincent, Canada, New York, Australia – there is good and there is also bad. And Trinidad & Tobago is still paradise in the world. All the bad happening in Trinidad, it have plenty worse happening in the world. But Tobago more paradise than Trinidad!
