A trifecta of the best films on Cable & DIRECTV

Today’s Number One Film:

The Artist, 7.15pm HBO Signature. Watch this if you liked Slumdog Millionaire, Intouchables or The Descendants. The silent French film (with English subtitles discernible even with the Spanish ones on DirecTV) that won the Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes (nominated Best Picture) and Césars, deserves every bit of the recognition it got.

A Trifecta of Today’s Best Films on the Box

If BC on TV could be sure of English subtitles, the Hungarian thriller/horror, White God, would have been today’s number one pick; though it is probably not today’s “best” film, it is almost certainly the most original – even with Locke, The Lobster, Slumdog Millionaire, Stranger Than Fiction and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind all screening.

Today’s number one film:

Slumdog Millionaire, 10am Fox Movies. Watch this if you liked any of Bride & Prejudice, Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala AND Life is Beautiful, American Beauty or The Departed. Danny Boyle’s exuberant direction makes the stark poverty of inner-city India bearable long enough for his deeply compassionate and sympathetic story of young love to take hold; worth it just for the clever flashing back from the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" A Trifecta of Today’s Best Films on the Box

Had it only screened even an hour earlier, today’s top pick would surely have been White God (11.05pm, FoxCin) one of the most imaginative – and amazingly shot – films of the last 30 years. It dips to near-collapse in the last reel but, up to then, even the most jaded cinefile ought to be captivated; if you aren’t blown away by the opening scene, though, don’t bother; it’s that kind of film.

Late in the week, Sunday programming for most movie channels had not yet been released but the available choice was still good enough to toss up half-a-dozen films with not a lot separating them for the top spot.
