A Trifecta of What’s Best on the Box for Sunday 7 October 2018
If it hadn’t been picked less than two months ago, and if it started even an hour later, The Hours (BEST FILM OF THE DAY, 8.09am FoxCin) would have taken today’s top spot; also, because of the genre headings, the Also Rans ended up with a lot more good film than the Just Nosed Outs.
Today’s Number One Film:
Hombre, 7.10pm Fox Classics. Watch this if you liked Cool Hand Luke, The Wild Bunch or 3.10 to Yuma. A great, offbeat Western includes a contender for Paul Newman’s best role – including Cool Hand Luke and The Verdict – as the white Apache drawn into a Greek tragedy that reveals all that was wrong with Manifest Destiny. His performance as a man who chooses to live and die on his own terms could have given rise to the description “quiet intensity”.Based on an Elmore Leonard novel, the story itself is top notch and the performances are even better. The direction is as close to flawless as it gets. They really don’t make ‘em like this any more. This is a Western for people who hate Westerns. The Fast & Furious XLIII crowd should be reminded there are no car crashes at all but anyone who enjoyedO’Level English should love it.Directed by Martin Ritt/ 1967/ USA/ Drama-Western-Thriller/111 mins/Unrated, probably PG.
Colossal, 5.47pm Fox Comedy. Watch this if you liked Shutter Island, Ginger Snaps or The Illusionist. One of the best surprises of 2016, Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigalondo makes a seamless blend of relationship drama and creature horror as easily as the story itself straddles two continents, America and Asia.Using Japanese creature horror as its literal jumping off point – the first scene could have come from Godzilla – this very clever, immaculately directed film stretches its possibilities so easily, it looks more like it’s just flexing its muscles. The less said about the plot, the greater the viewer enjoyment, though it is definitely not a film for those that like their stories to be linear. Just don’t ask why it’s showing on a film channel with “comedy” in its name.Directed by Nacho Vigalondo/ 2016/ USA-Korea-Spain / Comedy-Creature Horror-Fantasy-Sci-fi / 109 mins/ Rated R for language.
Lion, 10.25am HBO2. Watch this if you liked Slumdog Millionaire, The Theory of Everything or 42. An uneven film – the top half weighs far more heavily on the viewer’s consciousness than the bottom one – but, still, far too good a true story to do anything but please in the balance. The most serious criticisms of the film – that it sugar coats the plight of lost children, that there really isn’t a lot of meat on the bones of the story and that it races, pace-wise, to catch up with itself at the end – are probably well-founded but the whole still comes out all right in the end.A feelgood film that would never have happened without modern technology generally and Google Earth specifically.Directed by Garth Davis/ 2016/ USA-UK-Australia/ Adventure-Biodrama / 118 mins/ Rated PG-13 for thematic material and some sensuality.
