The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup

Even for people who actively dislike his music, the documentary about relationships in his band, Lenny Kravitz: Just Let Go (10pm DTV) ought to be intriguing. For the hard rockers, Soundgarden is on right after; those who prefer music might prefer to switch to the excellent, if limited in scope, Don Cheadle bio of the biggest name in music since Mozart and Beethoven, even if it starts later than BC on TV’s 6pm-10pm definition of primetime (Miles Ahead, 10.55pm Max). Had the great Paul Newman/Robert Redford caper flick (The Sting BEST FILM OF THE DAY, 5.15pm FoxClas) started an hour later, it would have got today’s pick.

Today’s Number One Film:

Lawless, 9pm Cinemax Ch 509. Watch this if you liked Black Mass, The Departed or The Proposition. The Australian director of The Proposition and The Road adds another gripping notch to his belt with this powerful Depression/Prohibition tale of three bootlegging brothers in the American South. The amazing Tom Hardy and the very strong Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, as well as Gary Oldman in a not-major role more than compensate for the casting of Shia LeBeouf in a lead role; not even he, though, can completely firetruck up an excellent screenplay by Nick Cave, the singer/songwriter of the Bad Seeds, who also wrote the script for The Proposition. The depiction of violence, though, is graphic, realistic and gruesome. Directed by John Hillcoat/ 2012/ USA/ Crime-Drama-Thriller/ 116 mins/ Rated R for strong bloody violence, language and some sexuality/nudity.
