A Trifecta of What’s Best on the Box for Sunday 2 September 2018

Even more Clockwork-ian Orange-ian appy-polly-logies required this week; I am still geophysically blocked in Europe, which sounds physically painful but only prevents virtual access to the film schedules. The best BC on TV can do in the circumstances is recommend three films on HBO – but, this week, I know certain they will screen at the same time on the same channels because I’ve had the assistance of the redoubtable Rachael at DIRECTV, without whom I would have been guessing, based on European HBO programming.

Today’s Number One Film:

Star Wars Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, 12.55 midday MaxPrime. Watch this if you liked the Indiana Jones or the Lord of the Rings trilogies or the Avengers. Though one of the “new” ones, this Star Wars blockbuster fits in, chronologically, somewhere around III-and-a-half and, technologically, way on top of all its predecessors – including even perhaps The Force Awakens. The bigger your home TV, the more you will enjoy a movie purpose-designed for Imax screens. Even on regular human being TVs, though, Rogue One flings the viewer into hyperspace entertainment. For its substantial runtime, there is not a dip in excitement levels. Yes, it is pure escapist cinema – but who doesn’t want to get away nowadays? If you don’t cheer at the last frame, you’ve a heart of stone – or, at least, were totally unmoved by the original George Lucas epics. Directed by Gareth Edwards/ 2016/ USA/ Action-Adventure-Sci-Fi-Fantasy/ 134 mins/ PG for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action.

Also watch:

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part I, 10.30pm HBO Plus. Watch this if you liked Alice in Wonderland, any of the Twilight or any of the other Harry Potter films. The least frightening Harry Potter since Prisoner of Azkaban is still far too scary for young children – despite the franchise’s regular screening on channels with the word “family” in their names. The beginning of the end of JK Rowling’s spectacular, extended fable about growing up, is so good, you find yourself wishing the filmmakers had had the idea of splitting the books into two movies earlier; the last frame is so spectacular, you almost don’t mind the obvious “to be continued…” end.Had it screened even an hour earlier, it would certainly have been today’s number one film. Directed by David Yates/ 2010/ UK-USA/ Action-Adventure-Fantasy/ 146 mins/ Rated PG-13 for some sequences of intenste action violence, frightening images and brief sensuality.

Knocked Up, 10.30am HBO Plus. Watch this if you liked SuperBad , The 40-Year-Old Virgin or The Hangover. Judd “40-Year-Old Virgin” Apataow’s second film is almost as funny as his first. This part-frat boy, part stoner comedy is done unusually well because of an unusually intelligent script – and the romantic element is superbly handled. Very funny, quite touching and entirely engaging. Directed by Judd Apatow/ 2007/ USA/ Romantic Comedy/ 129 mis/ R for sexual content, drug use and language.
