A Trifecta of What’s Best on the Box for Sunday 4 February 2018

Either of the first two Also Ran films might also have taken the BEST FILM OF THE DAY.Rock music fans and culture vultures generally might groove on a half-decent concert film, even if it ain’t no Last Waltz (Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same, 11.20am TCM).

Today’s Number One Film:

Inception, 6.30pm HBO PLUS BEST FILM OF THE DAY. Watch this if you liked Shutter Island, The Matrix or Pan’s Labyrinth. With Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing & Mixing Oscars and Best Director, Screenplay, Music, Special Effects & Best Sci-Fi Film Saturns, the most imaginative American film since Adaptation manages to mix visceral, pulse-racing action & tension with real cerebral satisfaction. Even if you don’t understand it – and, once you pay attention, you will, and will love it – the action and effects alone could blow your mind. Simply excellent. Perhaps the best American film made so far this century (even if by a Brit director). Directed by Christopher Nolan/ 2010/ UK-USA / Action-Sci-fi-Thriller/ 148 mins/ PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout.

Also watch:

Colossal, 8.30am Fox Movies. Watch this if you liked Shutter Island, Ginger Snaps or The Illusionist. One of the best surprises of 2016, Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigalondo makes a seamless blend of relationship drama and creature horror as easily as the story itself straddles two continents, America and Asia.Using Japanese creature horror as its literal jumping off point – the first scene could have come from Godzilla – this very clever, immaculately directed film stretches its possibilities so easily, it looks more like it’s just flexing its muscles. The less said about the plot, the greater the viewer enjoyment, though it is definitely not a film for those that like their stories to be linear. Directed by Nacho Vigalondo/ 2016/ USA-Korea-Spain / Comedy-Creature Horror-Fantasy-Sci-fi / 109 mins/ Rated R for language.

Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles, 6.55pm HBO Caribbean. Watch this if you liked Jim Jeffries: Freedumb, Bill Maher… But I’m Not Wrong or Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic. The smartest, funniest woman in America – perhaps on the planet – considers nothing sacred and, accordingly, everything is available for comic dissection, deconstruction and re-serving as truth; even rape. Her first HBO special shows just how increasingly uncomfortable you can grow – and still crack up laughing. Her sheer decency and goodness and her love of humanity transforms material that might be shocking in the hands of someone else into poignant, inspiring – and firetrucking hilarious – speech. The closing song, Diva, by itself deserves an Emmy.Miraculously good but not for those who really believe in miracles.Directed by Liam Lynch/ 2013/ USA/ Standup Comedy/ 53 mins/ Rated TV-MA.
