The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup
If it started within BC on TV’s 6pm-10pm primetime, Jack Nicholson’s great gumshoe noir (Chinatown, 5.45pm FoxClas) would certainly have got the nod, but only because the better half of the best American movie ever made (**The Godfather Part II BEST FILM OF THE DAY, 8pm FoxClas) was picked recently.
Today’s Number One Film:
Beasts of the Southern Wild, 6.25pm Golden. Watch this if you liked Moonlight, Melancholia or The Tree of Life. Perhaps the American film most relevant to life in Trinidad & Tobago, this little gem of independent feature narrative takes the viewer into, not Martha’s Vineyard or Napa Valley, but ‘the Bathtub’, a forgotten, impoverished community of the American South, where everyone is an offbeat character, no one can make it alone, the whole community is perpetually under threat and a deluge of Biblical proportions is imminent. The world of the six-year-old narrator, Hushpuppy, may seem way different from yours– until there’s a flood on the main road and your electricity goes. If Trini wannabe filmmakers could be made to appreciate films like this instead of Hollywood blockbusters, their movies would be far, far better. A life-changing film for those people in Trinidad & Tobago who are not frontline members of the Bruce Willis/Vin Diesel Fan Club. Directed by Benh Zeitlin/ 2012/ USA/ Adventure-Independent-Drama-Fantasy / 93 mins/ Rated PG-13 for thematic material including child imperilment, some disturbing images, language and brief sensuality.
JUST NOSED OUT:
**Paddington (Animated-Drama-Family-Mystery), 6.59pm Max; **Room (Drama-Thriller), 6.55pm HBOS; **Moon (Drama-Sci-fi), 7.25pm ISat; The Illusionist (Drama-Mystery-Thriller), 7pm Prmt.
BEST Pay Per View BET: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
