The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup

If it started within BC on TV’s 6pm-10pm primetime, the Laurence Olivier/Michael Caine masterpiece, **Sleuth BEST FILM OF THE DAY (5.40pm FoxClas) might well have got the nod, although it’s been picked twice for the year already; it’s that good.

Today’s Number One Film:

Picture courtesy lejizifagovy.ax1.euHotel Rwanda, 7pm The DIRECTV Channel. Watch this if you liked Sometimes in April, Blood Diamond or Shooting Dogs. Hotel Rwanda deals with the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 in which nearly a million people, almost half of them children, were hacked and bludgeoned to death, often by their neighbours. It tells the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, Rwanda’s version of Oskar Schindler, who saved the lives of 1268 people by sheltering them in the Hotel des Milles Collines, where he was the assistant manager. The great strength of the film is, it reveals the full extent of the horror without a single gory scene. The most chilling aspect of the most evil act since World War II (until the bombing of Baghdad), though, is that the rest of the world, led by the West, completely ignored the systematic, brutal, extended violence for no reason other than the people were dispensable. In the strongest line of the film, Nick Nolte, as a UN Peacekeeping Force colonel, says to Rusesabagina, (powerfully played by American Don Cheadle), “We think you’re dirt. We think you’re dung. You are not even a nigger. You’re an African”. Distressing but strongly recommended. Directed by Terry George/ 2004/ UK-USA-South Africa / Drama-History-Thriller/ 124 mins/ Rated R for violence, disturbing imaes and brief strong language.
