The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup

If its starting time had qualified as BC on TV primetime (6pm-10pm), Guy Ritchie’s second comic gangster flick (Snatch BEST FILM OF THE DAY, 10.25pm FoxCom) might have got today’s nod. Anyone in doubt whether the original was far better than the green screen-remake can have it removed by watching the Ralph Macchio original (The Karate Kid, 6.55pm Edge) and the first few minutes of the Jaden Smith travesty that follows on the same channel at 9.20pm. Today’s top slot was filled despite the not-OCD-enough screening of both its sequels (III: Beyond Thunderdome, 5.09pm; *II: The Road Warrior 7.16pm,) in reverse order on the same channel!

Today’s Number One Film:

Courtesy Rotten TomatoesMad Max, 7.16pm Cinemax Ch 509. Watch this if you liked any of the other Mad Max films, any of the Terminator films or Waterworld. An Australian upstart of an action movie and one of the great cult films of all time, anywhere in the world, Mad Max more than makes up with imagination and attitude for all it might lack in budget and production values. Set in a fuel-starved, post-nuclear Apocalypse world, it scores as high in excitement as its budet was low. A groundbreaking effort that is now a standard textbook in the school of guerrilla filmmaking, it made a megastar of one Mel Gibson, but even that can be forgiven. Directed by George Miller/ 1979/ Australia/ Sci-Fi-Thriller / 88 mins/ Rated R.
